Even in a state like Nevada, known for its expansive, empty landscapes, the Basin and Range National Monument, approximately a two-hour journey north of Las Vegas, redefines the term “remote.” The preserve covered an area of 704,000 acres and was established in 2015. It offers innumerable possibilities for outdoor activities such as climbing, cycling, camping, and hiking, and its desert valleys and mountain ranges are dotted with Indigenous rock art sites. The reason to go now is to see “City,” the contemporary artwork that holds the record for being the largest of its kind anywhere in the world, which debuted to the public in September of 2022. The artist Michael Heizer conceived of a collection of mounds, depressions, and stelae for the monumental open-air sculpture made from dirt, gravel, and concrete.
